However, in the more casual gardening sense of the word — meaning a plant that spreads aggressively and requires active management to keep in bounds — bee balm absolutely qualifies. Many gardeners use “invasive” colloquially to describe any plant that spreads beyond where they intended it to grow, and by that standard, bee balm earns the label with ease. In ideal growing conditions, particularly in rich, moist soil with plenty of sunlight, a single plant can colonize a substantial portion of a garden bed within just a few years, crowding out neighboring perennials and shrubs.

With a consistent approach to management, you can enjoy all of the plant’s considerable ornamental and ecological benefits while keeping it firmly within its designated boundaries. The key is regularity; a little maintenance each season prevents the kind of major intervention that becomes necessary after years of neglect.
Division is the most fundamental and effective control method. Growing Bee Balm Successfully While Managing Its Spread

The leaves and flowers are edible and have a pleasant, minty-oregano flavor that works well in salads, teas, and as a garnish. The essential oils in bee balm contain thymol, the same compound found in thyme, which has documented antimicrobial properties. This rich history of usefulness adds another dimension to the plant’s appeal beyond pure ornament.
