Understanding Why Gladiolus Corms Need to Be Lifted
Gladiolus are stunning summer-blooming plants that produce tall, dramatic spikes of color in virtually every shade imaginable. Native to South Africa and parts of the Mediterranean, these plants evolved in climates that experience warm, dry winters — a far cry from the cold, wet conditions that gardeners in USDA hardiness zones 7 and below contend with each year. Because of this, the corms that power each plant’s growth are particularly vulnerable to frost damage and prolonged exposure to moisture during dormancy.
When soil temperatures drop below freezing, the cellular structure of a gladiolus corm can be permanently damaged. Ice crystals form within the tissue, rupturing cell walls and leaving the corm unable to sprout the following spring. Even in regions where the ground doesn’t freeze deeply, persistent winter moisture can cause corms to rot in the soil. Lifting and storing them indoors each autumn is therefore not simply a recommendation for tender gardeners — it is a necessary practice for anyone wanting to enjoy their gladiolus collection year after year.
Understanding the biology of the corm itself helps clarify why proper storage matters so much. Unlike a true bulb, a gladiolus corm is a solid, starchy structure that stores the energy the plant needs to push through the soil each spring. Around the base of the parent corm, small cormels — sometimes called cormlets — develop throughout the growing season. These tiny offspring can be grown on over several years to produce flowering-size corms. Protecting all of this material over winter ensures not just survival but expansion of your gladiolus collection for seasons to come.
Knowing the Right Time to Lift Your Corms
Timing is everything when it comes to lifting gladiolus corms, and getting it wrong in either direction can have real consequences. If you lift the corms too early, they will not have had enough time to fully ripen and harden after the flowering period. Corms pulled from the ground prematurely tend to shrivel in storage because they haven’t accumulated the full complement of starches they need to sustain themselves through dormancy and power next year’s growth.
The general rule of thumb is to wait approximately six to eight weeks after the flowers have finished blooming before you lift the corms. During this period, the foliage continues to photosynthesize and transfer energy back down into the corm, essentially “banking” nutrients for the following year. The leaves will gradually turn yellow and begin to die back naturally. This is the visible cue that the corm is entering dormancy and has finished its work for the season. Do not be tempted to cut the foliage back prematurely; allow this process to complete on its own schedule.
From a calendar perspective, most gardeners in temperate climates find that October is the ideal month for lifting gladiolus corms, though this can shift depending on your local climate and when you originally planted. The critical environmental trigger is the approach of the first hard frost. You want to lift the corms before the ground freezes but after the foliage has had adequate time to die back naturally. In warmer zones where light frosts are the norm, you may have more flexibility. In colder northern climates, it’s wise to keep a close eye on the extended forecast once September arrives.

How to Lift Corms Correctly Without Causing Damage
The physical process of lifting gladiolus corms requires a little care and the right tools. A garden fork is generally preferable to a spade, as the tines are less likely to slice cleanly through a corm than a flat spade blade would. Insert the fork into the soil roughly six inches away from the base of the plant and lever gently upward. Work around the plant from multiple angles if needed, loosening the soil before attempting to pull the corm free. Yanking at the stem is a reliable way to snap it off and leave the corm behind in the ground.
Once you have worked a clump loose, shake off as much excess soil as possible and take a close look at what you’ve retrieved. You will typically find the old, shriveled parent corm still attached beneath the plump, new corm that formed on top of it during the growing season. You can remove this old corm and discard it — it will not bloom again. Clustered around the base of the new corm, you’ll find the small cormlets mentioned earlier. Separate these carefully and keep them if you want to grow them on; otherwise, you can compost them.
After lifting, use clean scissors or pruning shears to cut the stem down to within an inch or two of the top of the corm. Avoid pulling or twisting the stem off, as this can create a wound that becomes an entry point for rot or disease during storage. Inspect each corm carefully as you work through your bed. Any corms that show signs of soft spots, mold, unusual discoloration, or pest damage should be set aside and either treated or discarded. Introducing diseased material into your storage container is one of the fastest ways to lose your entire collection over the winter months.
Curing Corms Before Storage: A Critical Step Many Gardeners Skip
Curing is the process of allowing freshly lifted corms to dry thoroughly before placing them in long-term storage, and it is a step that far too many gardeners either skip entirely or rush through. Without proper curing, residual moisture clinging to the surface of the corm and within its outer skin layers can lead to fungal growth and rot that will quietly destroy your collection while it sits in a drawer or box through the winter. Taking the time to cure corms correctly pays significant dividends come spring.
To cure your gladiolus corms, spread them out in a single layer in a well-ventilated area that stays between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. A garage, a covered porch, a shed, or an airy spare room all work well for this purpose. The key is good airflow — do not pile the corms on top of each other or place them in a container while they are still curing. Mesh trays, old window screens, or even a simple layer of newspaper on a table all provide adequate surfaces. The corms should remain in this environment for a minimum of two to three weeks, though up to six weeks is not excessive if conditions allow.
You will know the curing process is complete when the outer skin of the corm has dried to a papery, almost husk-like texture. The corm itself should feel firm and solid throughout — any soft or spongy areas indicate moisture is still present, or worse, that rot has set in. At this stage, gently brush off any remaining dried soil. Some gardeners also dust their corms lightly with a fungicide powder such as sulfur dust or a commercially available bulb dust at this point as an extra precaution against fungal issues in storage, particularly if they have had problems with rot in past years.

Proper Storage Methods and Conditions for Winter
Once your corms are fully cured, they need to be stored in conditions that will keep them dormant, dry, and free from rot until planting time returns in spring. The ideal storage environment for gladiolus corms is cool but not freezing — temperatures between 35 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit are considered optimal. A consistent temperature is more important than hitting a precise number; fluctuations between warm and cold can cause corms to begin breaking dormancy prematurely or to suffer stress that weakens them for the growing season ahead.
There are several practical storage methods that experienced gardeners swear by, and the best choice often depends on the number of corms you are storing and the space available to you. Common approaches include:
- Paper bags or open mesh bags: Place corms loosely in brown paper bags or mesh produce bags with the tops left open for airflow. Label each bag clearly with the variety and color. This method is simple, inexpensive, and works well for small collections.
- Cardboard boxes with peat moss or vermiculite: Layer corms between dry peat moss, vermiculite, or coarse sand inside a cardboard box. These materials help regulate moisture around the corms without sealing in humidity. This is a popular choice for larger collections.
- Nylon stockings or pantyhose: An old gardener’s trick — place corms in old nylon stockings and hang them from a hook or rafter. The nylon allows excellent airflow on all sides of each corm while keeping them neatly organized.
- Wooden crates or slatted trays: These provide the best natural airflow and are ideal if you have a cool basement, root cellar, or garage with stable winter temperatures.
Regardless of the method you choose, the storage location itself must meet a few non-negotiable criteria. It must remain above freezing at all times — even a brief dip below 32 degrees Fahrenheit can kill corms outright. It should also stay relatively dry; garages or basements that experience significant humidity swings are problematic. Check on your stored corms every three to four weeks throughout the winter. Remove any that show signs of softening or mold immediately to prevent the issue from spreading to neighboring corms. A single rotting corm left undetected can ruin dozens of its neighbors before spring arrives.
Preparing Corms for Replanting in Spring
As winter gives way to spring and soil temperatures begin climbing back toward 60 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s time to bring your stored gladiolus corms back out into the light and prepare them for another growing season. Before planting, take each corm out of storage and conduct a final inspection. Healthy corms will be firm, plump, and show a visible growing point — a small bud or eye — at their top. Discard any that have become completely shriveled, feel hollow, or display signs of advanced rot or mold.
Some gardeners like to give their corms a head start by setting them out in a warm, bright location two to four weeks before their intended planting date. This process, sometimes called pre-sprouting or chitting, encourages the corm to begin developing a shoot before it ever goes into the ground. Pre-sprouted corms tend to establish more quickly after planting and can bloom a week or two earlier than corms planted directly from storage. This technique is especially useful in climates with shorter growing seasons where every day of warmth counts.
When planting conditions are right, gladiolus corms should be placed in well-draining soil with the growing point facing upward, at a depth of approximately four inches for standard-sized corms. Spacing of six inches between corms is generally recommended to allow for good airflow and prevent overcrowding as the plants mature. If you saved cormlets from the previous year, these can be planted in a nursery row and grown on for one to two seasons before they reach flowering size. With consistent care through the growing season and diligent attention to lifting and storing each autumn, a modest collection of gladiolus corms can grow into a remarkable display that improves every year.
