Why I Decided to Skip Drywall Altogether

What I found opened up a whole world of creative possibilities I hadn’t even considered before starting this project.
The other factor that pushed me firmly into the no-drywall camp was the sheer DIY-friendliness of the alternatives. Once I committed to finding an alternative, I threw myself into research mode. Modern shiplap, tongue-and-groove planks, and board-and-batten installations have completely reinvented what wood walls can look like. Painted white or in a soft neutral, these treatments create a clean, contemporary aesthetic that actually photographs beautifully and adds real warmth to what is typically a cold, utilitarian space.
I also seriously considered rigid foam insulation panels combined with a fabric or wood finish. They clip together, resist moisture inherently, and can be removed if you ever need to access the wall. What I Actually Chose: Shiplap and Rigid Foam
After weighing all the options, I landed on a combination approach: rigid foam insulation boards as my primary wall layer, topped with painted shiplap in the main living area and sealed plywood in the utility and storage sections. The rigid foam gave me the moisture barrier and insulation value I needed without creating a cavity where air and condensation could pool. Gluing it directly to the concrete block eliminated any gap between the wall and the finish surface — a gap that can become a mold incubator in humid climates.
For the shiplap, I sourced pre-primed pine boards from my local lumber yard and ripped them down to consistent widths on my table saw. There’s something deeply satisfying about creating your own shiplap rather than buying the pre-milled version — you get exactly the width you want, the material is cheaper per board foot, and the slight imperfections in hand-milled boards actually add character to the finished wall. I left a consistent gap between each board using a nickel as a spacer, which created that classic shiplap shadow line without any measuring.
Installation was straightforward. I glued the foam panels to the concrete with construction adhesive, then used a nail gun to attach the shiplap boards to horizontal furring strips I’d run across the foam. The whole assembly is mechanically fastened to the concrete through the foam, so it’s structurally solid. - Phase 5 – Trim and Finishing: Added corner trim, baseboard, and window casing to complete the look. Caulked all seams between trim and boards, primed any bare wood, then applied two coats of interior paint.
One thing I wish I’d planned more carefully was the electrical. I had to work around two existing outlet boxes and a light switch, and routing the new wiring through the furring strip channels before closing everything up with shiplap was fiddly work. If you’re doing this project, make a detailed electrical plan before you install anything, and leave yourself access panels anywhere you have junction boxes or panel connections that may need future maintenance. A little foresight here saves enormous headaches later.

Dealing with Corners, Windows, and Tricky Spots

Take your time here, make test cuts on scrap, and don’t be discouraged if your first attempt isn’t perfect.
Window wells were perhaps the most creative challenge. My basement has two small egress windows, and finishing the window bucks — the deep recesses between the window frame and the finished wall — required building out custom frames from lumber to create a continuous finished surface. I used the same shiplap on the window bucks as on the main walls, which creates a unified look and makes the windows feel like intentional design features rather than afterthoughts. Adding a simple wooden sill at the bottom of each window buck completed the look and gave me a small shelf for plants or decor.
The Cost Breakdown and What I’d Do Differently
Let’s talk numbers, because cost is often the deciding factor in choosing a finishing method. My basement is approximately 600 square feet of wall space. Using drywall with professional installation would have cost me an estimated $4,500 to $6,000 based on the quotes I received, and that didn’t include insulation. My shiplap and foam system, done entirely with my own labor, came in at just under $1,800 for materials. Even if I’d hired out the installation, I could have done it for significantly less than the drywall option.

Living With It: Six Months Later
