Leave it covered for at least twenty-four hours before you try to move it, and forty-eight is even better. After that initial period, flip the planter over and peel away the leaf. This is genuinely the best moment of the whole project. If you used the release agent like you were supposed to, the leaf peels back fairly easily, and what you find underneath is a stunning negative impression of every vein, ridge, and subtle texture from the original leaf — captured permanently in stone. Run your fingers across it and you can feel every detail. Some people compost the leaf scraps; others press them flat and keep them as a little record of what created the planter.
Let the planter keep curing for another week before you put it outside or add soil and plants. During this time, the concrete is releasing calcium hydroxide, which makes the environment around it quite alkaline — enough to potentially harm plant roots if you plant too soon. To bring the pH down, soak the planter in water for several days, changing the water each day, or brush the inside with a diluted white vinegar solution to speed up the neutralizing process. After that, rinse it thoroughly and let it air dry completely before planting anything.
Sealing, Displaying, and Inspiring Others
Once your planter is fully cured and neutralized, a coat of concrete sealer is a great finishing touch. A clear penetrating sealer will darken the surface just slightly and bring out the contrast between the veins and the surrounding concrete in a way that really makes the leaf pattern pop. Two thin coats, with full drying time in between, is usually all you need.
