If you’ve never grown Nectaroscordum siculum — better known as Sicilian honey garlic — you’re genuinely missing out on one of the most beautiful and underappreciated bulbs you can put in the ground. Native to the Mediterranean, especially Sicily, Sardinia, and parts of southern Europe and western Asia, this plant sits somewhere between a classic ornamental allium and something you’d stumble across in a wild meadow. That’s a big part of its charm. The drooping, bell-shaped flowers come in the most gorgeous mix of cream, pink, and maroon, and once you’ve seen it in bloom, it’s very hard to forget.
It belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae, and was actually classified within the genus Allium for a long time — which is exactly why “garlic” ended up in the common name. Bruise the leaves or stem and you’ll get a mild, garlicky smell that confirms the family connection to onions and garlic. In the garden, though, it’s grown entirely for its looks, and what a show it puts on. That pendant floral display in late spring to early summer is something few other bulbs can match for sheer elegance.

Unlike some of its allium relatives, it doesn’t commonly fall victim to allium leaf miner or allium white rot in typical garden conditions — though if you’ve had those problems with alliums before, it’s worth staying alert. For most gardeners in most gardens, this is going to be a largely trouble-free plant.
Slugs and snails can occasionally go for the emerging foliage in early spring, especially during wet spells or in gardens where mollusc populations are already high. Established plants can usually shrug this off without much lasting damage, but freshly planted bulbs or young plants are a bit more vulnerable. If you want to deter slugs without reaching for chemical pellets, physical barriers like copper tape, crushed gravel, or wool pellets work reasonably well. Nematode-based biological control is another solid option for gardeners who prefer to keep things environmentally friendly.
The main thing that can genuinely threaten these plants is bulb rot, caused by fungal pathogens in waterlogged soil. Nectaroscordum siculum self-seeds with genuine enthusiasm when the seed heads are left to ripen and drop, and seedlings will typically appear the following spring. They’ll need two to three years to reach flowering size, so you do need a degree of patience — but the process requires next to no effort from you beyond choosing a good spot and stepping back. Over time, a small initial planting can quietly expand into something really special.
If you’d rather speed things up or keep the spread under control, dividing established clumps is the way to go. Do this in early autumn once the foliage has fully died down and the bulbs are dormant. Lift the clump carefully with a fork, tease apart the individual bulbs along with any offsets or small daughter bulbs that have clustered around the parent, and replant straight away at the right depth and spacing. It’s also worth dividing every three to five years just to stop the clumps getting too congested — overcrowding will gradually reduce flowering as competition for nutrients and space increases.
Growing from seed directly is perfectly doable too. Collect fresh seed from ripe heads in late summer or early autumn and sow it immediately into deep pots or seed trays filled with a free-draining, gritty compost. Put the pots somewhere cold — a cold frame or unheated greenhouse works well — and leave them over winter. The seeds need that cold period to break dormancy, and germination should follow in spring.
