Miltoniopsis was officially split off from the closely related genus Miltonia back in 1889, but the confusion between the two is still alive and well among hobbyists. The real difference comes down to where they’re from: Miltoniopsis grows in the cool, high-altitude Andes, while true Miltonia species are from the warmer, lower forests of Brazil. That difference in origin means they want completely different care, and mixing them up is one of the most reliable ways to kill either one. Getting that distinction straight really is step one.
Part of what makes Miltoniopsis so popular is that the flowers are almost over-the-top beautiful — and they smell incredible. A healthy plant can throw up multiple spikes at once, each one carrying five or six large blooms that can measure three to four inches across.
