- ‘Red Licorice’ — selected for intensely red autumn foliage color that emerges earlier than most selections, extending the period of fall color display.

Native to the Appalachian mountain region rather than the coastal plain, it shares many of the same ornamental qualities as Fothergilla gardenii but scales up to six to ten feet tall and wide at maturity. It’s also hardier in cold climates, making it a better fit where Dwarf Fothergilla might be pushing its limits. The two species naturally hybridize, and several excellent hybrid cultivars are available in the nursery trade that bring out the best of both parents.

There are a few ways to propagate Fothergilla gardenii, and the right approach depends largely on what you’re trying to accomplish and what resources you have available. For commercial growers, softwood cuttings taken in late spring to early summer — treated with rooting hormone and kept under mist — are the go-to method. It works reasonably well, though Fothergilla isn’t the easiest native shrub to root from cuttings. Success rates vary depending on timing, the health of the mother plant, and the specific conditions during the rooting period, so some patience and experimentation may be needed.
Growing from seed is possible, but it’s a bit of a commitment. The seeds have complex dormancy requirements, needing a warm stratification period followed by a cold stratification period before they’ll germinate — and the whole process can stretch out to twelve to eighteen months. On top of that, seedlings from named cultivars won’t come true to type, so you’ll end up with variable plants rather than exact copies of the parent. For those reasons, seed propagation tends to be reserved for producing straight species plants destined for ecological restoration work or naturalistic plantings, where a bit of genetic variation is not only acceptable but actually a good thing.
